Today I got one of those letters you want to get from your husband when he’s in Sudan and scheduled to get on a plane in six hours to eventually (36 hours later) have a romantic reunion with you in LAX three hours before you both get on yet another plane to head up to Idaho for a long-anticipated weekend away with friends.

Yup, one of those letters, those “everything is on track, and I’m completely safe, and by the way I just love you so much” letters…

Hi Lisa,

Juba’s in lockdown today. No one is allowed to move anywhere. How do you like the drama?

Supposedly they’re doing a small arms search. Some reports say the lockdown will end at 1. I’m hoping.
